Supercharge Your Coffee, Supercharge Your Brain

Fats & Tonic Herbs for a Healthier Coffee Experience

How do you take your coffee: Black and explosive? White and tamed? Or full of butter and oil?

I get why some of you like it black as gold: Good coffee’s got a great unique taste and in its pure state you’re more likely to feel the kick from both the bitters and the caffeine. The down side, however, might be that you get a bit jittery or fidgety or you feel a lack of energy a couple hours after your coffee – something known as the ‘coffee crash’. If you’re experiencing any of this, but you wanna hold on to your beloved drink, consider supercharging your coffee!

Supercharge step 1: healthy fats

“One butter coffee, please!” The easiest way to supercharge your coffee is by adding healthy fats. These fats help release the caffeine in a more gradual way so your morning cup keeps you running nicely all day long. Moreover, the right fats are fuel for the brain, improving cognitive function, and said to suppress food cravings as they will keep you full and satisfied for a longer time. It’s the basic layout of bulletproof coffee (invented by Dave Asprey) in which coconut oil and butter play major roles.

I don’t exactly remember when it was that I started experimenting with my coffee. But ever since, I’m kinda in love with my fat coffee. I personally love butter a combination of butter and coconut milk in it. I simply add these ingredients to my coffee and blend them together (I usually use a whisk for this, as this is faster and involves less cleaning up than using an electrical blender). I feel that this mix makes the coffee way gentler to my system than purely black coffee or coffee with only some kind of watery plant milk.

If you wanna go for a combo of butter/ghee, coconut oil and coconut milk and need some measurements, you can follow these: 1 heaped teaspoon of coconut oil, 1 tbsp of butter, 50 ml coconut milk. Cinnamon if you like it.

Supercharge step 2: magic herbal powders

You can also add some extra herbal love depending on what you need or crave. This could be medicinal mushrooms or tonic herbs. More recently I’ve found Reishi a really nice addition. It blends in quite well. Same with Astragalus which I’ve taken a couple of winter seasons (both are also great to amplify your immunity).

As a general rule with herbs and mushrooms: You really have to try to see how it tastes. Always go gradually, I’d say. Simply the change to buttered coffee might be a big one for you. Give yourself time and let your taste buds adjust and overall: see how you feel compared to your usual coffee.
